CUCC Kickoff Meeting for Troop 407 2016-2017 Scouting Year (JKM)
Wear your full Class A uniform.  Let's start this year looking sharp!
This will be an important information sharing time for everyone planning to be involved in Troop 407 during this coming year.
All Scouts must bring: 
  • At least one parent, preferably both
  • $60 annual dues: make checks to "Troop 407, BSA"
  • Updated Scout Profile information forms which were sent to you in the mail.  Please provide us with all of the requested information.  Many forms that we must file with the Council throughout the year require this information and it is much easier to collect it all now.  Legible entries in a brightly colored pen will greatly ease data entry.
  • If you did not attend summer camp with us, a new complete Annual Health and Medical Record.
Those scouts (First Class and over) interested in running for SPL or ASPL, come prepared to speak about your qualifications and ideas.

We will focus on patrol camping, cooking, hiking, and playing in the forest. We will also be testing Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class advancement requirements that were taught at the Trail To First Class program at Chawanakee and getting them signed off. Camping cost is $10 per person. Patrols will set and collect food costs.

Mojave National Preserve Campout to explore Cinder Cones, Lava Flows, and Lava Tube (Eric T). We will climb the Cima Dome and walk through an underground lava tube as well as exploring other facinating areas along Kelbaker Road in the Mojave Desert between I-15 and I-40.

Bulldog Patrol: 5b. Identify two ways to obtain a weather forecast for an upcoming activity. Explain why weather forecasts are important when planning for an event.
5c. Describe at least three natural indicators of impending hazardous weather, the potential dangerous events that might result from such weather conditions, and the appropriate actions to take.
5d. Describe extreme weather conditions you might encounter in the outdoors in your local geographic area. Discuss how you would determine ahead of time the potential risk of these types of weather dangers, alternative planning considerations to avoid such risks, and how you would prepare for and respond to those weather conditions.
Squirrel Patrol: 3a. Discuss when you should and should not use lashings.
3b. Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clove hitch.
3c. Demonstrate tying the square, shear, and diagonal lashings by joining two or more poles or staves together.
Wolverine Patrol: 7a. Demonstrate bandages for a sprained ankle and for injuries on the head, the upper arm, and the collarbone.
7b. By yourself and with a partner, show how to: Transport a person from a smoke-filled room, Transport for at least 25 yards a person with a sprained ankle.

This event is put on by the Claremont Museum of Art. We help setup tables and chairs, art displays, umbrellas, etc in the morning before the event starts and then help put it all away in the afternoon when it is over.

Colorado River,
Lake Mohave
Canoe camping trip on the Colorado River with Troop 402  (JKM)
We will launch below (literally at the base of) Hoover Dam and pull out at Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave. We will drive to a hotel near the launch point and do a car shuttle to the take out point on Saturday, canoe Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and drive home Tuesday evening. We will carry all of our gear in the canoes and will camp on the beach along the river on Sunday and Monday nights.

We will attend the 10am service as a group in full, neat, dress Class A uniform. We will all act as ushers and greeters before the service and some of us will participate as acolytes, as readers, and leading the Children's Celebration. We are hosting the "coffee" after the service so plan to stay until about 11:30.

Tenderfoot 4b. Describe common poisonous or hazardous plants; identify any that grow in your local area or campsite location. Tell how to treat for exposure to them.
Squirrel Patrol:

First Class 7c. Tell the five most common signals of a heart attack. Explain the steps (procedures) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
First Class 7d. Tell what utility services exist in your home or meeting place. Describe potential hazards associated with these utilities and tell how to respond in emergency situations.
Viper Patrol:

San Gabriel River Trail Bicycle ride from Azusa Canyon to Whittier Narrows County Park and back along the San Gabriel River on a paved trail closed to motor vehicles. It is about 15 miles each way for a total of 30 miles. This ride is appropriate for riders of all abilities. We will carry sack lunches and water for a lunch break at Whittier Narrows Nature Center. We will take the Evey Canyon trail from Mt Baldy Road to the top of Potato Mountain, watch the sunset and the lights of the valley come on, and then hike back down, arriving just as it gets dark.  It is about 5 miles round trip.  Bring water, snacks, and your Ten Essentials.  We need enough parents to drive the group to the trailhead and at least two adults to hike.
